THE complete archive of the ADFL Bulletin (1969–98) is now available to the chairs of ADFL-member departments in electronic form at the ADFL Web site (www.adfl.org).

The 1,221 articles in the archive have been indexed under the search categories shown below; the numbers in parentheses indicate how many articles are indexed under each term. We have designed the search engine to be as flexible as possible: members may search the bulletins by these categories, by words or phrases that appear in the text of an article, by author, by title, or by any combination of the above. You can also browse the tables of contents of all issues in the archive.

The sample searches below illustrate how the system works and what kinds of resources are available in the archive. Search results appear on the screen as a list of article titles, and each title is linked to the complete article text.

A search for articles indexed under the category “articulation between high school and college” yields sixty-five article titles, a list perhaps too long to browse through comfortably. This search can be refined by adding another search category. For example, searching for articles indexed under both categories “articulation between high school and college” and “proficiency” yields this more manageable list of seven titles:

“Searching for Life after Death: In the Aftermath of the President's Commission on Foreign Language and International Studies”
Schulz, Renate A. (Sept. 1981)

“School-College Articulation and Proficiency Standards: A Status Report”
Cummins, Patricia W. (Sept. 1987)

“Articulation in New York State: Toward a Model for a National Foreign Language Curriculum”
Jeffries, Sophie, and Irmgard C. Taylor (Fall 1991)

“The Role of the Department Chair in Foreign Language Articulation”

“Articulating the Teaching of Foreign Languages: The Minnesota Project”
Metcalf, Michael F. (Spring 1995)

“Articulation and Achievement: The Challenge of the 1990s in Foreign Language Education”
Jackson, Claire, and Karen Masters-Wicks (Spring 1995)

“Competency-Based Admission: A Project of the University of Wisconsin System”
Sandrock, Paul (Spring 1995)

The system allows searches using any combination of search functions. For example, you can combine a category search with a word search. A search for articles indexed under the categories “faculty development and mentoring” and “the chair's role” that contain the word “teaching” in the text yields the following fourteen articles:

“Faculty Development; or, Faculty Life as a Bildungsroman”
Malone, David H. (Nov. 1978)

“Encouraging Growth in Language Departments”
Settle, James N. (Sept. 1982)

“Managing for Success”
Seigneuret, Jean-Charles (Jan. 1986)

“Between Scylla and Charybdis: Teaching and Research on the Academic Deep”
Green, Tamara M. (Winter 1992)

“The Proactive Mentor: Suggested Strategies”
Pérez, Janet (Winter 1993)

“Institutional Responsibility and Chair Training: The Michigan State Model”
Peters, George F. (Spring 1994)

“Who Needs Development?”
Jarvis, Donald K. (Spring 1994)

“Faculty Assessment and Development in a Changing Profession”
Berry, Alice (Spring 1996)

When you search for articles containing a particular word or words, abbreviating the root of the word with an asterisk allows you to search for all forms of the word (e.g., a search for “philosoph * ” will retrieve articles containing the words “philosophy,” “philosopher,” “philosophical,” etc.). Note that a word search finds all articles in which the word appears, not just articles that address the subject. For example, a word search for “translation” gives 311 article titles, but a search of the category “translation” shows only 25 articles indexed as substantially addressing the issue of translation. A word search for “French” gets 766 hits, while a word search for “French” combined with a category search for “literature” and “pedagogy” yields this more relevant list of 16 titles:

“Teaching Language and Literature in a Changing and Technological Society”
Sandberg, Karl (May 1971)

“The Role of Foreign Languages in the Total Curriculum”
Anderson, Charlotte (Sept. 1974)

“The Feature-Length Film in the Foreign Language Classroom”
Garrity, Henry A. (Mar. 1981)

“Feminism and the Authority of Teaching”
Borinsky, Alicia (Nov. 1983)

“Teaching Third World Literature”
Bjornson, Richard (Nov. 1983)

“Modular Courses in Foreign Language and Literature”
Richardson, Peter N. (Mar. 1984)

“Adapting Queneu's Exercices de style to Classroom Use: An Experiment in Creative Writing at the Undergraduate Level”
Herman, Gerald (Sept. 1985)

“Teaching French Women Writers the First Time”
Silber, Ellen S. (Apr. 1987)

“Teaching Literature through Theory: A New Model for the Undergraduate Major”
Cipolla, William F. (Apr. 1987)

“Focalization without (Too Much) Fuss: Using Narratology to Teach Thérèse Desqueyroux”
Penrod, Lynn Kettler (Jan. 1988)

“Starting at the End: Teaching Candide with Theory”
Cipolla, William F. (Jan. 1988)

“Getting off the Page and Making a Scene: Teaching Drama in the Classroom”
Mather, Clare M. (Jan. 1989)

“Skinside Inside: The National Literature Major versus Comparative Literature”

“Global Thinking, Local Teaching: Departments, Curricula, and Culture”
Berman, Russell A. (Fall 1994)

“Teaching Authorial Point of View: Using Film to Question the Male Perspective in French Literature”
Ponterio, Robert (Fall 1994)

“Way off Broadway and Way out of the Classroom: American Students De-, Re-, and Per-forming the French Dramatic Text”
Essif, Les (Fall 1995)

I hope these examples will inspire you to come to the Web site and explore the ADFL Bulletin archive on your own. Please let me know what you think of this new resource for chairs. I welcome your suggestions for improving the service.
